Cap Fendig's Proposed Widening of Sea Island Road
Commissioner Cap Fendig wants to widen Sea Island Road between Demere and Frederica roads to include four lanes of traffic. We think this would be a horrible and unnecessary addition of nothing but traffic, noise, and pollution, would represent a serious safety hazard for residents, and cost millions in tax dollars.

Local Quality of Life Impact
Immediate impact on neighborhoods will be extreme. Epworth, Hamilton Landing, Mariners' Landing (pictured at left after County removed trees for pipe work), Hawkins Island, and other neighborhoods will loose their tree barrier to traffic, reducing property values and destroying their peace and quiet.
Environmental Impact
Proposed addition of traffic lanes includes a 250 foot easement. 250 feet?!? This will require the destruction of acres and acres of marsh and cutting down many treasured live oaks and other trees.
It's All About Our Taxes
Road expansion in a fragile marsh is incredibly expensive, and will result in a "firehose" of traffic entering St Simons with completely inadequate road infrastructure to handle it. This will require even more expense to build out and manage. Total road expansion cost is multi millions of dollars of taxpayer funds for Sea Island Road alone.
